4,000 young people supported through Flint Family Fund
25 June 2024
Almost 4,000 young people have been supported through the second and third rounds of the Flint Family Fund. The Fund aims to address the education and learning gap for children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Leeds, as well as the disparity in physical activity and movement levels amongst young people from different backgrounds.
The funded activities from the second and third rounds include free skateboarding sessions, personalised tutoring and athletics sessions. Organisations have also delivered group reading and crafting, circus classes, theatre activity, confidence-building workshops and more.
Thanks to these activities, 1,028 young people reported improved physical wellbeing and 885 have reported improved mental wellbeing. Additionally, 605 young people have reported improved numeracy and/or literacy skills.
One organisation, The Running Charity, supported young people affected by homelessness or complex needs. Their project supported better mental health, physical health and social progression outcomes. They delivered 1-1 and group fitness sessions in parks around Leeds, weekly strength and yoga classes and took part in parkrun on Saturday mornings. They also took young people on a residential camping trip to Snowdon.
All 51 young members of the programme said their physical health got better. 47 said the activities also improved their mental health.
To date, Flint Family Fund has made 39 grants to 34 Community Organisations, investing £325,000 to support young people in Leeds. The latest (fourth) round of the Fund awarded nearly £95,000 to 10 Community Organisations in late 2023. They will deliver their activity over the next 2 years, building on the already fantastic impact of the Fund.
