Flint Family Fund Supports Children and Young People to Thrive

11 May 2023

Almost 2,000 young people have been supported by the Flint Family Fund since its launch in 2020. The Fund aims to address the education and learning gap for children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Leeds, as well as the disparity in physical activity and movement levels amongst young people from different backgrounds.

To date, the Fund has invested more than £230,000 in 25 Community Organisations to make a difference for young people in Leeds. The funded activities include pay-as-you-feel youth theatre, 1:1 study support and homework groups, a peer mentoring and youth leadership programme and various sports projects including skateboarding, athletics and powerchair football.

Thanks to these activities, 1,151 young people have reported improved mental wellbeing and 1,158 have reported improved physical wellbeing. Additionally, 1,005 young people have reported improved social networks.

One organisation, Flourishing Families Leeds, were awarded a grant at the end of 2021 to run their Family Literacy Clubs for 2 years. The clubs support parents and children to develop confidence in their literacy skills, using stories, games and crafts. So far, 61 people have been supported from the funded activity, with 36 reporting improved mental health and wellbeing because of the project.

One participant said “We think Story Tellers is fab. Loved the different themes every week and all the different crafts. We’ve had time together as a family and will miss coming every week! Layla, my daughter has looked forward to it each week as have I too.”

The latest (third) round of the Fund awarded over £75,000 to 8 Community Organisations in late 2022. They will deliver their activity over the next 2 years, building on the already fantastic impact of the Fund. The Fund is set to open for applications again in early autumn 2023.
