Our Stories:
Meet Lindi

“I started volunteering here with the Fusion Cafe in October. I was looking for a charity to help as I had spare time, and I wanted to get into community projects. I had moved to Leeds about two years ago and I didn’t know much about the communities around the area. I wanted to find somewhere where I could help.
Now I’m employed as an Outreach Worker. I speak to the community who utilise the projects that we have, and get to know what they need, or how we can develop the projects. We have a lunch club for elders and I make sure they have activities to do so they’re not lonely or isolated at home. I’m also helping to organise an NHS blood drive.
It’s fascinating to hear stories of other people and how they grew up, the issues and problems that they’re facing, and how we can help. Some people may not be aware of what we’re doing. They may see us around, but they don’t really know what’s going on. It’s my job to do the outreach to make sure they know that we are here, that we can help with a lot of things.”
Black Health Initiative works with disadvantaged and marginalised communities across Leeds to promote equality of access to education, health and social care. Funding from Leeds Community Foundation has supported a range of their activities, including mental health work and support for the organisation’s strategic development.
