Our Stories:
Meet Mo

26 January 2022

“I’m from London.  Growing up I did a lot of bad stuff.  My mum knew I was a product of my environment, so we moved to Leeds, and I instantly loved how diverse it was.  If I went to the park there’d be all kinds of people playing together.  I got away from the issues I faced in London.  I didn’t feel the need to follow anyone.  I felt comfortable being who I was.

Loran (Let’s Do More Founder) came to me one day and asked if I wanted to try coaching. He told me how he saw me communicating with the team and how impressed he was. I didn’t think about it much but said yes because I wanted to give back to the community.  The community that had helped me break my old habits and become a new person. So, I started volunteering in the basketball sessions.

The whole point of Let’s Do More is to help people in vulnerable positions. Having come from that background, I know what it’s like for some of these kids. They see me as an older brother and I try to provide that support.  I suffered loss at their age and I didn’t have a father figure for a long time, so I want to be there for them.

Recently, because of the funding, I was able to get qualified – level 1 coaching basketball award. I’m more passionate about coaching now than playing.  I want to become the best coach I can be. I want to make a difference.“

Lets Do More CIC aim to raise the aspirations of young people living the most deprived communities, primarily through sport.

Through Leeds Community Foundation’s Flint Family Fund, they provided basketball sessions for young people from deprived areas to increase their activity levels, improve their physical/mental well-being and encourage socialisation after the Covid-19 pandemic.
