Blacks Solicitors is an award-winning law firm based in Leeds and have recently become Members of Leeds Community Foundation
Nick Dyson, head of Commercial Property at Blacks Solicitors, discusses the community work they’re involved in, and how the firm is involved with Leeds Community Foundation.
- What’s your involvement with Leeds Community Foundation?
We recently took the decision to become members of the Foundation having supported them and some of their partner organisations at various events over the past few years.
We have also built up good relationships with a number of the trustees, professional team and community groups who work with the Foundation.
- How key is social value to you as an individual and organisation?
It’s fundamental both for me personally and for the firm. Recognising that we have a responsibility to help others in the community who are less fortunate than ourselves is at the heart of who I am, and what we as a business subscribe to.
This is the reason we established our corporate social responsibility (CSR) team over 10 years ago. Throughout that time we have supported numerous local charities by raising funds and their profile. We have also provided pro-bono advice, joined the board of local community groups and provided young people with work experience where possible. We continue to look at ways to help local charities and social enterprises, and are always considering new and innovative ways to fundraise.
- What community issues are important to you?
Equality is the most important issue to me. I appreciate much of what I can do has been made possible by the support I have had from family, friends and teachers. Many people who haven’t access to such support struggle with their health and education, which can lead to poverty and homelessness. I think greater diversity is a further example of this which I am interested in.
- Has the pandemic altered the way you view investment into communities?
It’s definitely made a difference. We have all been tested throughout the past couple of years. As a firm we appreciate more than ever the difficulties that smaller organisations face. I know that the support that organisations like the Foundation provide has been critical in ensuring many smaller community organisations have been able to continue and thrive
Sadly, not all of those community groups have been able to make it through.
- What makes Leeds a unique city?
The diversity of people and cultures really make Leeds a unique place to live and visit. I also think it is a forward thinking city which is continually innovating and developing.
While it’s a big city attracting national and international companies like Channel 4, Burberry, and HMRC, it is also small enough for people to know each other. I value that strong sense of community and the sense of civic pride that we hold.
- Have you got any advice for organisations who are looking to support Leeds Community Foundation?
Just come along and get involved. It’s a great way of meeting people outside of your normal circle and will inspire you to hear what amazing work takes place in the city, sometimes only a few streets away from where you work or live.
Leeds Community Foundation creates opportunities for all by working with partners to make a positive impact within communities across Leeds and Bradford. We do this by generating and investing philanthropic giving as well as maximising statutory funding to deliver grants and provide trusted expertise into Community Organisations, benefitting thousands of local people.
