We recently caught up with long-term Leeds Community Foundation supporter, Helen Thomson. Hear how she’s been involved with the Foundation over the years, and why it’s so important for her to support local communities.

How have you been involved with Leeds Community Foundation? 

I became involved with Leeds Community Foundation through an initial investment grant from Yorkshire Forward. I lead the team that worked with Leeds Community Foundation, then I got to know what the Foundation was beginning to do around investing in our communities and I wanted to support. From that point onwards I joined the Board and have been actively involved ever since. 

Why is it important to you to support local communities? 

I moved to Leeds for my first job, setting up a hostel for homeless young people. That was some time ago, and from that point I saw what can be achieved when you have communities, be that geographical or communities of interest that want to create opportunities where people thrive. When people and organisations have the resources / funding all pulling in the same direction, then look at what can happen – I have been fortunate to be part of The Old Fire Station now a successful community hub in the heart of Gipton. 

What do you love about Leeds?  

Leeds is my city! I have lived here for many years, this is where my family and friends are. So, of course I want to play a part in making it a city for everyone to believe that they have opportunities, wherever you live in Leeds.  

What advice would you give to people who are thinking about supporting Leeds Community Foundation? 

Leeds Community Foundation is known for matching the needs of communities with funding and bringing people & businesses together. It is also much more than that, it is a place where you meet others from different life and business backgrounds, a place for ideas and I think still has more potential to use the influence of all involved to be part of shaping the future of Leeds, for all its communities.
