Sir Ken and Lady Morrison Fund 2021 – Improving reading and writing for people in Bradford

1 December 2021

With a focus on literacy, the Sir Ken and Lady Morrison Fund supports organisations working with young people, families, carers and adults from disadvantaged backgrounds to improve their reading and writing.

In November 2021, the second round of the fund awarded over £85,000 to 10 Community Organisations supporting people across the Bradford District. Their projects will run for up to two years.

The organisations that were awarded funding are:

The broad range of projects that these organisations will deliver include:

        • Support for South Asian women to become job-ready with a focus on the language used in CVs, job searches and Health and Safety.
        • Texts designed by an author and poet to engage disabled people and their families in literacy, and improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing.
        • Empowerment for males, primarily fathers and their sons, to develop the skills and confidence to read more together and independently.

These projects will build on the outcomes from the first round of the Sir Ken and Lady Morrison Fund which funded activity between 2020 and 2021. Thanks to the 10 projects funded in that round, 795 people benefited in total, with 479 people reporting improved literacy skills and 346 people reporting improved confidence.
