Volunteers Week: John McGhee
28 May 2021
The 1st-7th June is Volunteers Week, which is a time to say thanks for the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering.
We’d like to highlight the fantastic work of our volunteers, who over the past year have contributed over 1,144 hours towards subcommittees, grants panels, events and much more.
In this article we speak with John McGhee, a trustee of Leeds Community Foundation.
- Tell us more about your involvement with Leeds Community Foundation?
I joined Leeds Community Foundation as a Trustee in 2017 and am also Chair of the Grants and Impact subcommittee. I also volunteer fairly frequently on grants panels and also help with grant application assessments and also grant outcome reports.
- What drives your support?
It’s all about me putting something back. I’ve been incredibly fortunate in my life which has presented lots of opportunities along the way. I came from a humble background with a single parent Mum where money was tight, so I know some of the issues people face. If me volunteering helps people get opportunities, then my effort is worthwhile.
- What community issues are important to you?
For me it is all about equality of opportunity regardless of background, ethnicity, gender or physical ability. From there its then encouraging people to take the opportunities that are available and making the most of them. Unfortunately, too many of the population in our city don’t get those opportunities.
- Have you got any advice for individuals who are looking to get into volunteering?
Don’t think there is any limitation in what you can offer. Any time or effort you can offer is always gratefully received and you will be amazed how personally rewarding what you do will be.
